Establishing Minimum Standards Relating to Location, Design, Construction and Maintenance
of Individual Sewage Disposal Systems The regulations were last updated September 1998. Currently, the regulations are being revised to update soils based siting, alternative technologies, and other various provisions. These updates are planned to be completed within the next year. The state of Rhode Island is not considering the implementation of performance base standards. Aerobic treatment units (ATUs), alternative soil absorption designs, gravelless/chamber systems, drip irrigation, mound systems, sand filters, and other technologies are allowed in the regulations through exceptions or variances. The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) does not require management systems or districts; however, state law allows for towns to create management districts if desired. The DEM provides a funding mechanism for individual homeowners needing assistance in replacing a failed system or installing a new system. For information contact Mr. James Riorden at (401) 222-4700 Ext. 4421. The DEM administers an onsite certification program for installers and inspectors.
