Louisiana State Regulations

Louisiana Constitutions, Statutes and Codes

Sewage Disposal
Sanitary Code, Chapter XIII
September 20, 1994

The State of Louisiana updates onsite wastewater regulations on an as needed basis. The regulations were last updated
September 20, 1994. Currently, the regulations are under revision and are scheduled for public hearing. These regulations should
have an effective date of early spring 1999. Louisiana is not considering the implementation of performance based standards.

Innovative and alternative (I/A) technologies are listed within the body of the regulations as an appendix under mechanical
systems. The addition of new I/A technologies is restricted to three new additions per year. The new regulations will provide
allowances for enhanced treatment systems.

Wastewater management systems are not required for individual systems. It is the homeowners responsibility to provide
perpetual maintenance.

There is not a statewide funding source available to assist homeowners replacing failing systems or installing new
systems. Some parishes (counties) have funding programs, otherwise the homeowners must find private funding. For more
information, contact the local parish health offices.

Onsite certification programs are also required for community systems and are administered by the Department of Health and
Hospitals. The State provides a workshop that must be attended every five years to renew standing certifications. For more
information contact Ms. Boudreaux at the address and/or telephone number listed above.

The state of Louisiana does not have an onsite training center; however, an individual sewage workshop is provided twice a year
for those installers with a temporary license. Those installers with a permanent license are required to repeat the course every five
years. For more information contact Ms. Boudreaux at the address and/or telephone number listed above.

Currently, there are no demonstration projects or research projects occurring in the state of Louisiana.
