On-Site Wastewater Systems Onsite regulations for South Dakota were last amended in November 1985. There are no plans to update the current regulations. The state of South Dakota is not considering the implementation of performance based standards. South Dakota defines both innovative and experimental technologies as a new device or design that needs further testing before approval. All alternative designs need to be submitted for review and approval before construction. Gravelless/Chamber systems and mound systems are used frequently in the state of South Dakota. Any treatment technology design can be submitted for review prior to construction. If approved, it may be allowed by variance or exception. South Dakota regulations do not require management systems or maintenance districts to monitor and maintain onsite systems. The state of South Dakota does not provide a funding source to assist homeowners in replacing a failing system or installing a new system. It is up to the individual homeowner to locate private funding sources. There is a state onsite certification program for contractors, installers and inspectors. The State Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) administers this certification. Contact Mr. Rich Hanson for further information at (605) 773-3351. Training is provided for wastewater professionals through the Cooperative Extension Service which has offered training workshops in the past. The future status of offering courses is unknown. Currently, there are no ongoing research or demonstration projects in the state of South Dakota. The DENR regulates large municipal septic system
regulations. For information regarding these regulations, contact Kent Woodmansey
with the DENR at the above address and telephone number. |
