Sewage Disposal System Design Rules New Hampshire regulations were last updated in 1995. Currently, numerous sections in the rules are being updated, with a finalization sometime in January 1999. The state of New Hampshire is not considering the implementation of performance based standards. The current regulations cover technologies such as aerobic treatment units (ATUs); alternative soil absorption designs; drip irrigation; gravelless/chamber systems; and mound systems. The regulations allows for innovative/alternative technologies to be accepted by exception or variance. The state of New Hampshire does not require management districts to monitor or maintain onsite systems. There are no plans to develop such a management program. The state of New Hampshire does not provide a funding source to assist homeowners in replacing a failing system or installing a new system. It is up to the individual homeowner to locate private funding sources. Designers, installers, and inspectors are required to pass an onsite certification program. This program is administered by the DES. Contact Mr. Lehneman for further information on certification programs. The state of New Hampshire coordinates some training efforts with the Granite State Installers and Designers Association, a non-profit organization.
