Wastewater Disposal Onsite regulations for Mississippi were last updated in August 1996. Additional Regulatory updates occurred in August 1995 for Standard IV and February 1997 for Standards I; II; III; V; VIII; IX; and XIII. Regulatory updates occurred in May 1997 for Standards VI; VII; X; XI; and XII. Currently, there are no plans to update the existing regulations. Performance based standards have already been implemented in Mississippi. Aerobic treatment units (ATUs), alternative soil absorption designs, drip irrigation, evapotranspiration beds, gravelless/chamber systems, mounds, sand filters, spray systems, and TVA constructed wetlands are covered in the regulations. New technologies added within the latest regulatory update include the EEE ZZZ Lay Drain Systems (Expand Polystrene) and Whiffle (PTI - Multi-Pipe Configurations). Experimental technologies are allowed by exception or variance within the current regulations. The Mississippi Onsite Wastewater Association is planning to approach state legislators concerning the development of management systems and districts to monitor and maintain onsite wastewater treatment systems. Lee Septic Tank Company The Mississippi State Department of Health (SDH) provides funding assistance to homeowners for replacement of failing systems or installation of new systems. Contact Terri Sasser with the SDH for further information. The SDH offers a certification and license program for installers with an annual renewal fee. Manufacturers and consultants are also required to obtain a license from SDH. Contact Mr. Turnbo with SDH for further information. Currently, there are no demonstration projects or research projects occurring in the state of Mississippi. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulates large municipal septic systems.
