Regulation The State of Kentucky plans to update their onsite wastewater regulations every two years. The regulations were last updated October 15, 1994. Currently, all regulations are under revision and all sections will be reviewed. The state of Kentucky will also be revising the certified installer's regulations and creating a certified inspector's regulation. An onsite advisory committee has been established for the purpose of regulatory review and related regulatory issues. The advisory committee will be reviewing the possibilities of the use of performance based standards. Kentucky regulations allow the following technologies: Aerobic treatment units (ATUs); alternative soil absorption designs; gravelless/chamber systems; mounds; wetlands; and peat systems. Drip irrigation is allowed as an experimental system. These systems are allowed through the use of exceptions/variances, as well as, sand filters and "at-grade" chamber systems. Management systems are required for cluster systems and experimental individual systems. Otherwise, management systems or maintenance districts are not recognized or required by regulation. There are funding programs available to assist homeowners replacing failing systems or installing new systems. For more information, please contact Mr. Nichols at the address and/or telephone number listed above. Onsite certification/licensing programs are administered by the State of Kentucky for inspectors and installers. Mr. Nichols can be contacted for additional information. The state of Kentucky is developing an onsite training center that may be established within the next year. Currently, there are two training groups providing training to installers and inspectors. This training is administered by the Environmental Management Branch. Dr. A.D. Karathanasis with the University of
Kentucky will be conducting a study on vertical separation to measure the amount of
separation needed from trench bottom to restrictive horizons. Dr. Karathanasis can
be contacted at (606) 257-5925. |
