Treatment and Disposal Systems Onsite regulations for Iowa were last updated May 1998. There are no plans to revise the existing code within the next year. The state of Iowa is not considering the implementation of performance based standards. Aerobic treatment units (ATUs), mounds, alternative soil absorption designs, gravelless systems, drip irrigation, mounds, waste stabilization ponds, and sand filters are covered by the regulations as approved alternative technologies. Within the last year drip irrigation and chamber systems have been added as approved alternative technologies. Currently, there is a provision for waste management districts to be incorporated under Iowa law. Also, the state of Iowa is beginning to use rural water associations as rural waste system managers. Iowa does not provide funding assistance to individual homeowners need to replace failing systems or install new systems. The state of Iowa does not have an onsite certification and licensing program for contractors, installers, or inspectors. Currently, there are no demonstration projects or research projects occurring in the state of Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources also
