Arizona State Regulations

Arizona Constitutions, Statutes and Codes

Minimum Requirements for the Design and Installation of Septic Tank Systems and Alternative On-site Disposal Systems Engineering
Bulletin No. 12
June 1989

The State of Arizona follows no set time schedule for updating onsite wastewater regulations.  Updates are done on an as-needed basis.  The Arizona regulations were last updated in 1989.   There are plans to revise or update the existing regulations; however, not before 1997.

Sections dealing with innovative and alternative (I/A) technologies are based upon a provision for the "demonstration of projects" and review of the system by a certified engineer.  Trenches, pits, and shallow bed disposal systems are approved by the local county health departments.

Municipal wastewater regulations are also covered by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.  Technical questions should be directed to Mr. Swanson, Manager of Wastewater Engineering Review at (602) 207-4440, or by mail at the same address listed above.
