NODP
Phase I
The National Onsite Demonstration
Program's (NODP) Phase I provided small communities in six U.S. states
seed money for the design, installation, and monitoring of alternative
wastewater systems. Each community, representing diverse geographic
regions, has both unique, yet some common wastewater-related problems.
The six Phase I demonstration sites and some of the environmental concerns
that were addressed include:
- Paradise, California,
where stringent state standards for groundwater protection require
removing nitrates and pathogens through soil absorption.
- Gloucester, Massachusetts,
which has coastal pollution and whose site restrictions include a high
groundwater table and shallow, glacial soils.
- Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts,
an area with coastal pollution and highly permeable soils.
- Anne Arundel County,
Maryland, which needs to control and prevent pollution of the Chesapeake
Bay.
- Benzie County,
Michigan, which has restrictions caused by numerous lakes, small lots,
sandy soils, and seasonal fluctuations in population.
- And Monongalia
County, West Virginia, with difficult terrain and shallow, impermeable
soils.
A total of 26 proven and innovative systems were installed, including
constructed wetlands, drip irrigation systems, biofilters, and recirculating
sand filters.
On completion of the project, a detailed summary report of NODP I was
published, giving details about each project and a summary of the monitoring
results obtained. A technical file was also compiled containing details
of the construction and monitoring of the various projects.
