Assessing Wastewater Options for Small Communities
Target audience: local officials

This curriculum helps local officials evaluate their community's current and future wastewater treatment needs and implement appropriate solutions. Topics include: introduction to wastewater, facility development, viability and assessment of a treatment system, regulatory requirements, selecting and working with consulting engineers, selecting wastewater technologies, project financing, and project commitment. The appendices for this training course contain overhead masters, system assessment instruments, information on wastewater technologies, plus additional resources. The training package has a Trainer's Manual, a Participant Guide, and a Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation. The Trainer's Manual and the Participant Guide are 426 pages in length. The presentation is available in electronic form on a 3 1/2" floppy diskette in both PC and Mac formats..

Onsite Wastewater System Operation and Maintenance
Target audience: operators and maintainers of onsite wastewater treatment systems

This package contains a trainer's manual, a trainer's resource pack, and an operator's manual. The trainer's manual provides information about program design and offers three program delivery options. The operator's manual provides technical information needed by trainers and operators. Topics covered include onsite systems, operator responsibilities and duties, principles of onsite systems, system components, operation and maintenance, and mathematics. The trainer's resource pack contains 139 transparency masters and nearly 400 color slides.

Industrial Pretreatment and Hazardous Material Recognition
Target audience: system operators, laboratory technicians, wastewater plant managers, public works administrators, industrial sector representatives

This package is designed to assist participants in reducing hazardous material entry into community wastewater collection systems and minimize negative impacts on treatment plant operations, sludge quality, and public worker health and safety. Topics are divided into four modules: federal regulatory requirements, hazardous material recognition and concerns, site inspection procedures and considerations, and corrective action programs. The student manual contains case studies, sample letters, inspection forms, and appendices, including a glossary, sample ordinances, and a copy of the federal pretreatment regulations. The trainer's manual includes all of this plus module summaries, instructor's notes, transparency masters, and slides.

Troubleshooting and Optimizing Wastewater Treatment in Small Communities
Target audience: intermediate-level wastewater operators and assistance providers

This package is designed to help wastewater operators troubleshoot treatment processes. It covers nutrient removal, lagoons, attached growth, and activated sludge processes. The four modules are designed for a two-day training course with the goal of helping operators troubleshoot and optimize treatment processes to achieve regulatory compliance and minimize environmental impacts. Each module includes an Instructor Guide with overhead transparency masters, a Participant Workbook, and a Reference Text. The workbooks use case example activities to help participants develop troubleshooting skills. The Reference Text contains information that covers all four modules. It also includes additional information on management, communication, and team building to address problems not directly related to process control. The curriculum also introduces participants to the use of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Handbook, Retrofitting POTWs. The handbook provides a systematic method for evaluating and improving the performance of existing, non-complying wastewater treatment facilities.
