Protecting water and wastewater assets: Where do we go from here?
Now that the deadlines for the federal Bioterrorism Act requirements have come and gone, what’s next on the horizon for water and wastewater systems? E-train interviewed U.S. EPA officials and other experts to learn about the status of national water and wastewater infrastructure security and emergency response planning (ERP), the resources available to small communities and trainers, and what the future may hold for small system security and ERP.

Florida Trainer Sees Both Progress and Need
Emergency response preparedness is an especially important issue for Floridians. Coy Donaldson, a groundwater specialist with the Florida Rural Water Association and a former security consultant, has been helping drinking water systems around the state become more prepared and secure.

“New” NESC seeks to provide enhanced services, resources for small communities
The National Environmental Services Center is transitioning from a program-based organizational structure to a functionally structured organization. “Our customers can anticipate enhanced services because of the closer, more cooperative and collaborative relationship of program elements within NESC,” says Richard Phalunas, Ed.D., interim executive director.
