NETCSC's Regulatory Update" Web site provides informationa bout rules, regulations affecting communities

To help small communities plan for the future, the National Environmental Training Center for Small Communities (NETCSC) offers a new Web site that provides a list of more than 20 drinking water and wastewater rules, regulations, and policies that affect small communities. This “Regulatory Update” site is located at www.nesc.wvu.edu/
netcsc/netcsc_regs.html.

“We hope this Web site will help trainers, technical assistance providers, local officials, and community planners to become familiar with current and upcoming rules for water and wastewater,” says John Hoornbeek, NETCSC director.

The site describes applicable regulations; the size of communities affected; specific rules for different size communities; and current, upcoming, and planned future Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act regulatory dates. It also includes helpful contacts and sources for additional details about the regulations and a glossary of acronyms and important terms.

In addition, a hard copy “Regulations Matrix” is also available. This document summarizes the regulations information on NETCSC’s Web site in a simple matrix format.

To request a copy of the “Regulations Matrix,” call NETCSC at (800) 624-8301 or (304) 293-4191 and request Item #TRBLRG02. The matrix costs $1.60 plus shipping and handling charges.

NDWC offers sanitary survey prep course on CD-ROM

The Montana Water Center (MWC) has created a fun and informative training CDROM for water system personnel and inspectors-in-training—the Sanitary Survey Fundamentals Prep Course. The National Drinking Water Clearinghouse (NDWC) is distributing this free CD.

Sanitary Sam leads field staff members, who are responsible for inspecting and evaluating small water systems for Safe Drinking Water Act compliance, through the course. Common terms of the industry are presented
creatively through the “Sink Sam” and word
search games.

Funded through MWC’s Technical Assistance Center grant and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Drinking Water Academy, the CD uses 3-D fly-ins, animation, games, narration, and video without requiring a plug-in. Course basics take approximately two hours to complete, preparing inspectors-to-be for the fast-paced sanitary
survey workshops.

Course sections cover organizing the sanitary survey, regulations, water sources, water supply pumps and pumping, storage facilities, treatment processes, distribution systems, cross-connections, monitoring and lab
testing, and utility management.

To receive a free copy of the Sanitary Survey Fundamentals Prep Course CD, call the NDWC at (800)
624-8301 or (304) 293-4191 and Request Item #DWCDTR19. Those who provide the 2-day or 3.5-day sanitary survey workshops may request up to 20 CDs.

Water Systems Council offers hotline for well owners

Well owners with questions about wells or well water can call the new Wellcare® Hotline operated by the Water Systems Council, a national organization focused on well systems not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The hotline is funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water. For years, EPA has operated the Safe Drinking Water Hotline, receiving as many as 300 calls a month related to private wells. EPA will now refer these calls to the Wellcare® Hotline.

In addition to reaching the hotline by phone at (888) 395-1033, anyone with questions about wells can access the hotline at www.wellcarehotline.org or www.watersystemscouncil.org.
