Watershed
Approach Helps Mend Waterways (PDF,
1.9MB)
NESC staff writer Caigan McKenzie wrote the cover story Watershed
Approach Helps Mend Waterways. In recent years, various organizations—the
U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
among them—have become interested in watershed approaches to assure
clean water. This article provides an overview to adopting a watershed
approach to water quality management.

Proper well construction and enforcement of local regulations are critical
in protecting public health, especially after a flood. This article examines
a situation in California and offers advice for future projects.
Asset
Management: A New Frontier for Utilities (PDF,
1.1MB)
Water and wastewater systems are made up of hundreds of different assets,
each with a different worth and different longevity. Asset management
is a holistic way of managing the tangible property in a system.
Raising
Water Infrastructure Awareness (PDF,
3.1MB)
On Tap Associate Editor Kathy Jesperson takes a look at a public
awareness project being developed at Penn State University. Most people
take water for granted and aren’t adequately informed about the
various work what must take place so that all of us continue to enjoy
clean, safe drinking water.

Tech Brief: Turbidity
Control (PDF, 180KB)
The Tech Brief, a regular feature in On Tap that describes
treatment technologies and issues for drinking water professionals, discusses
turbidity control. Often described as the cloudiness observed in source
water, turbidity can hinder treatment methods. This Tech Brief
examines turbidity and implications with the phenomenon from source to
distribution.

Ask the Experts
(PDF, 368KB)
On Tap’s panel of experts was asked the following question:
“The Center for Watershed Protection estimates that there are more
than 4,000 watershed groups around the country. Advocates see the watershed
approach as having numerous benefits and encourage water and wastewater
personnel to work with them to protect water resources. Do drinking water
professionals work with watershed groups in your area? What do you see
as being most beneficial about this approach?”
