SEARCH: Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communities and Households (Program 101)
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development

The SEARCH program helps very small, financially distressed communities with predevelopment feasibility studies, design assistance, and technical assistance on proposed water and waste disposal projects that serve local households and businesses. Eligible applicants are most state and local government entities, non-profits, and federally recognized tribes in eligible areas (i.e. a rural area with a population less than 2,500 that meets median household income criteria). The funds may be used to determine what’s necessary to get water and sewage services to a community (vs. to an individual). ¬†In communities that meet certain criteria--for example, if the community is not a Public Service District‚Äîthe proposed projects may include private water wells or septic/onsite wastewater systems.
