Drinking Water and Wastewater Funding Sources

Finding funds to construct or install community or individual drinking water or wastewater treatment systems can be a daunting task. This webpage provides a starting place for identifying federal and state funding sources that offer loans or grants for centralized drinking water and wastewater treatment systems and for individual water wells, septic systems, or other onsite wastewater treatment options.

This interactive U.S. map allows you to click on your state to find funding sources for a range of planning, development, construction, and operational activities for community drinking water and wastewater systems. Entities eligible to apply for the identified grants and loans include public bodies, tribes, colonias, publicly or privately owned water or wastewater utilities, certain non-profits.

The Environmental Finance Center (EFCN) (http://efcnetwork.org/) is a university-based organization creating innovative solutions to the difficult how-to-pay issues of environmental protection and improvement. The EFCN works with the public and private sectors to promote sustainable environmental solutions while bolstering efforts to manage costs.
